Research supports doing a systematic, structured literacy intervention (often known as Orton-Gillingham) for about 200 hours, which equates to about 2-3 hours per week for about 2-3 years.
This way of teaching depends entirely on the student mastering each concept. When I work with students, we do not move forward with a new concept until the previous one is solid.
This varies widely with each student, so one student may finish the curriculum in 18 months, while another student may not finish for about 4 years. The average student finishes in about 2 ½ years.
